Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

Assists the surgical team with preparation and care of patients undergoing surgical procedures.

Essential Duties:

  • Opens and prepares operating rooms utilizing aseptic techniques. Duties include determining room orientation, setting up necessary equipment/instruments/supplies for the day's scheduled surgical procedures, and checking to assure equipment is working properly.
  • Assists the surgical team as directed. Duties may include passing instruments and other sterile supplies to surgical team members, holding retractors, preparing sutures/sponges/ other surgical supplies, applying dressings, counting sponges/needles/supplies/instruments, and removing surgical drapes.
  • Performs cleaning and maintenance of the operating room between cases and at the end of the day; decontaminates, assembles, and sterilizes instruments/equipment/supplies.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and troubleshooting of surgical instrumentation and equipment.
  • Prepares for the following day's cases by pulling patient charts, organizing equipment and supplies, and ordering necessary equipment/instruments/supplies for specialty cases.
  • Assists with cleaning, processing, sterilizing, and preparing surgical instrumentation and patient supply items.
  • Assists nurses with procedures as directed.
  • Provides guidance and training to assigned student interns.
  • Supports and serves as a role model for our mission, vision, values, and customer service initiatives. Adheres to the organization's policies & procedures, and compliance guidelines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements
General Requirements * Must be certified as a surgical technician
Work Experience * No experience is required. * Related work experience--Preferred
Education * Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent plus completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist Program
Specialized Knowledge and Skills * Knowledge of surgical procedures, instrumentation, and correct terminology. The incumbent is also required to have knowledge of sterile procedures/aseptic techniques, and surgical procedures. * Knowledge of accrediting and regulatory standards and hospital policies related to the provision of patient care including HIPAA confidentiality and JCAHO mandates * Written and computer skills necessary to prepare required documentation * Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, and other health care professionals in the exchange of information * Mental ability to deal with the concerns and emotional needs of patients, and appropriately respond to stressful/emergency situations * Physical ability to stand for prolonged periods of time, transfer/lift/ reposition/assist patients, and properly set-up/utilize the equipment/ devices necessary in providing patient care * Demonstrates ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job
